Soraya Burg

Majolica Ceramics

Soraya Burg grew up in Iran surrounded by the many beautiful ancient monuments and art works of the Middle East. Within the arid and mountainous landscape of her childhood, the use of water in lush courtyard gardens, and brilliantly colored tile work provided a beautiful contrast to this landscape. These are the roots of Soraya’s current pursuit of Majolica ceramics. The Majolica process originated in Iran, moved westward, and was taken up and perfected in Italy.

Soraya has a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Master of Photo Journalism, both from the University of Minnesota. She has worked in painting, printmaking, sculpture, photography, landscape design, and ceramics. She has studied Majolica technique from Italian ceramists in Sarasota and Italy. Her current work uses this technique in expressing both traditional and more contemporary subject matter. She currently splits her time between Glenwood Springs and Tucson, AZ.
